Realised yesterday, when meeting dog trainer, Gabi von Post, www.gladahunden.se, https://www.facebook.com/gladahunden, that I had lost my pack (consisting of one, my frenchie Winston) and more importantly, he had lost his pack leader.
As much as I’ve watched Cesar Milan, www.cesarsway.com, read a bunch of dog training books and also have had well trained dogs before, with this little rascal I had let go of my role somehow. Not having established me as the leader, Winston got all stressed and insecure, and some of his behavior that I’ve seen as him, as bad habits etc was actually him trying to find some kind of harmony in the “chaos” of not being able to trust me taking care of our pack.
I get that he will test me, object to some of the new rules and so on, just like a child when you stand firm and not move, so to speak, but in the end he’ll be calmer, more secure and, like Gaby said, learn how to be polite.
A polite dog….that’s what I want!
And so far, he’s all calm, sleeping and being a dog. Me checking my energy, making sure that I breath “through my big toes” as Gaby says.
Taking him out to pee this morning, he waited for me to allow him to go out the door. On the way out a bit more excited and had to stop and wait for him to sit and relax but on the way in, he just waited on his own, at all three doors.
How cute is that! A polite dog! I love it!!!
