Celebrating Summer Soltice (Midsummer/midsommar) in Leksand, my childhood summer (and pretty much every school vacation) home I’m struck by how many “new Swedes” (recent immigrants) there are joining in the picnic, music and raising of the May pole tradition that is such a joyful holiday for most people in this country.
Gives a feeling of what Sweden is really all about, inclusion and equality. Reminding me of that those so called dark forces of neo nazis and alike are not who we really are and that we are more than them and our power of openness, acceptance and love will win over whatever comes our way.
After the May pole is raised we all sing the National Anthem and my friend and I look at each other with the same thought, that we are taking our flag and this song back.
Back from those hateful forces that are trying to slither their way into places of power and change what we’re really all about and that have used those symbols as their own.
Not being a very nationalistic country we’ve never really thought of being proud of being Swedish, proud of our flag etc but now it feels like it’s time, time to bring it back to values and thoughts where that pride shows the values of everyone being welcome and we are all the same even if we look different, sound different and have different backgrounds.
